Breaking: Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes Reveals Connection with Coach Andy Reid

The Kansas City Chiefs have won back-to-back Super Bowls, as well as three of the last five. Most of that can be attributed to the fantastic play of Patrick Mahomes, as well as the coaching of Andy Reid. In a recent interview with NBC’s Chris Simms, the star field general gave a bit of insight into his very strong connection with the man who has been his coach since he came into the league. “There’s actually times in games where I know what plays on the call before he calls it,” said Mahomes. “He starts sending personnel in, and I’m like, got it. I know exactly where we’re going and why we’re doing it… “That just comes with a lot of reps, a lot of time with Coach Reid, and a lot of the same guys in our football team.”

Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes Tops AFC West QB Rankings Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are considered by many to be the best quarterback-head coach duo in NFL history, but Mahomes and Reid are quickly approaching them. The duo has made it to the playoffs every single year since Mahomes became the team’s starter in 2018. If the team can continue their dynasty and win more Super Bowls, they could be primed to pass Brady and Belichick as the best quarter-coach duo ever.

On Thursday night, Carson Steele will be living a dream come true

As his new team hosts Baltimore, Kansas City’s rookie fullback will be having an amazing moment.

Watching an athlete reach their lifelong goal never stops being fun — especially when it’s one like Kansas City Chiefs fullback Carson Steele. The undrafted free agent beat the odds to succeed at Ball State and UCLA. Now he’s made the 53-man roster of the NFL’s champion team — and will play in the league’s season opener on Thursday night.

Back home in Greenwood, Indiana, his family doesn’t quite know what to make of it all.

“Honestly, they don’t really have too many words to say,” Steele admitted to reporters in the locker room on Sunday. “They’re just kind of starstruck. But they know I’ve been working really hard — and keeping on going from there. So they’re very excited for me — [and] really excited to cheer me on for the season.”

But there have been plenty of challenges to overcome. Steele has not only had to learn the complicated offense of head coach Andy Reid but also play as a kick returner. He can’t remember the last time he did it. And under the NFL’s new rules, it will be completely different than anything he — or his coaches — have ever done before.

“There’s so many moving parts to it,” he explained. “Picking up the rules, nobody really knows. So it’s everybody’s first time learning it – both the rookies and vets. So we’ve really just gotta lock in, learn the key details of everything and see – game-to-game – how it plays out.”

Steele says his new teammates are doing whatever they can to help him.

“All of the punt guys — all the special teams guys — have really been picking me up. They haven’t been shooting me down just because I’m a rookie undrafted guy. They’ve all kind of helped me out, picking me up and putting me in the spots where I need to be.”

But that still leaves a tantalizing possibility. As a kick returner, he could end up being first member of his new team to touch the ball as it begins what could be an unprecedented third straight championship season.

“It’s electric,” he said with a smile. “I’m not going to lie to you. Starting out the game by getting the ball? It’s always one thing that’s really excited me. I’ve just got to take it from there and go with it.“

Whether or not he gets the team’s first touch, though, this player with long blond hair, an infectious smile (and an alligator named Crocky-J back home) has already captured the imagination of Kansas City’s fans.

“It’s been awesome,” he said. “Chiefs Kingdom [is] always hyping me up – [and] hyping my family up, too. So [I’m] really thankful to them to welcome [me with open] arms – an undrafted guy. [I’m] very excited for that, too.”
