Hunter is having one of the best seasons of his career under coordinator Brian Flores.

Vikings OLB Danielle Hunter is having one of the best seasons of his career in a contract year. Heading into Monday night’s game against the Bears, Hunter has 12 sacks in 11 games, putting him on pace to surpass his career-high mark of 14.5 (2018 and ’19).

After missing all of 2020 and most of 2021 due to season-ending upper-body injuries, Hunter bounced back last season with 10.5 sacks and his third Pro Bowl nod while playing all 18 games (including playoffs). This season, he’s been on a different level when it comes to racking up sacks. He had three in Week 2 against the Eagles, two against Justin Fields and the Bears in the teams’ first meeting, and at least one in nine of Minnesota’s 11 contests.

Hunter, who turned 29 last month, has said this year that he feels like the best version of himself again. He — like so many other Vikings defenders — is thriving in Brian Flores’ ultra-aggressive scheme.

This offseason, Hunter skipped OTAs and was holding in at the start of training camp until he and the Vikings agreed to a re-worked one-year contract. It came with $17 million guaranteed, another $3 million in incentives, and positioned him to hit free agency after the season.

With his 11th sack of the season a couple weeks ago against the Saints, Hunter hit the first of three $1 million incentives. He’ll make another $1 million at 12.5 sacks and the final million at 14 sacks, meaning he just needs two more in the season’s final six games.

If he gets three more sacks this season, Hunter will not only set a personal best for a season, he’ll pass the great Jared Allen for sixth on the Vikings’ all-time sack leaderboard.
