Birmingham City considering 42-year-old manager That Will L…

Birmingham City are considering a swoop for the former Sheffield United boss as they hunt for a permanent replacement for Tony Mowbray. Gary Rowett finished the latter stage of last season in interim charge of the Midlands outfit.

Heckingbottom, 46, has been available since being sacked by the Blades in December and he has since been weighing up his next move in the game. He has been interviewed by Plymouth Argyle recently, as per journalist John Percy on X.

In this latest update regarding his future by Nixon on Patreon, he is now in the ‘frame’ for the Blues’ job as they hunt for their new manager. They have been relegated from the Championship along with Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town and are preparing for life in League One.

Birmingham City eye new candidate

Heckingbottom could be seen by Birmingham City as someone who could lead them into the third tier as they look to gain an immediate promotion.

The Yorkshireman spent his playing days with the likes of Sunderland, Norwich City and Sheffield Wednesday before hanging up his boots in 2012.

He then started his managerial career at local side Barnsley and got them promoted to the Championship in 2016, as well as winning the EFL Trophy in the same year.

Heckingbottom was lured away from Oakwell in 2018 and had two unsuccessful stints at Leeds United and Hibernian.

However, he reinstated his reputation during his time at Sheffield United and got them up to the Premier League last year after they finished 2nd.

The Barnsley-born man was dismissed by the Blades though late last year after a poor run of form in the top flight and he has since been available.
