Colorado Buffaloes get a dominating 96-53 win over Kentucky

The Buffs blowout the Wildcats by 43 points

Colorado women’s basketball Head Coach JR Payne was hoping this game would be good practice before her team goes on to play No. 10 North Carolina State. She absolutely got her wish.

This game was an absolute rout with Colorado beating Kentucky 96 – 53.

Aaronette Vonleh led the scoring with 19 points. Jaylyn Sherrod had 15 points and Tameiya Sadler added 10. Kindyll Wetta had 11 points off the bench.

“We knew this would be a very tough game for us, for a lot of different reasons,” Payne said. “We’re a group that does play emotionally sometimes, but we’re better when we’re pretty even keeled. We did a great job in the second half of that, staying out of the ups and downs of emotion, and just playing great basketball.”

Junior Aaronette Vonleh said, “I think we knew we’d be able to take advantage just in transition so capitalizing on that, making sure we’re all running our lanes, getting to the rim and being able to score on them before they’re settled. Then we just executed our offense and started being disciplined on defense.”

The Buffs take on North Carolina State on Saturday in their final game in the Virgin Islands. CU hasn’t taken on a top 10 team since 1995 when they bested Purdue 67-62.

Colorado head coach shared honest thoughts ahead of transfer portal season

The Colorado Buffaloes began the year 3-0 and was in the top 25 before losing seven of the last eight games ahead of the season finale against Utah. Still, Coach Deion Sanders has retooled the football program in under a year with talented players and has garnered consistent national media attention along the way.

The transfer portal is a major reason why Coach Prime was able to quickly build his roster and – despite the losing streak – players from across the country want to come play for Sanders and grow the program. But, with the portal season approaching and Sanders looking to lure more recruits and transfers, he dropped a clear message to players in search of NIL deals, per Barrett Sallee of CBS Sports.

The program and Coach Prime himself are the selling point, and despite a disappointing ending stretch, the Buffs improved drastically after a 1-11 season in 2022 under Karl Dorrell.

The bottom line for Coach Prime is this: He wants people who want to play for Colorado:

“We want players who want us. Trying to convince somebody and doing that and being held hostage financially … we ain’t with that. We want players who want to be a Colorado Buffalo.”
