Yankees Still Viewed as Top Landing Spot for Superstar Free Agent.
The New York Yankees are listed as the second-best landing spot for former MVP outfielder.
The New York Yankees added Juan Soto and Alex Verdugo to boost their outfield. Coming into the offseason, upgrading that unit was their biggest concern.
Adding arguably the best outfielder in Major League Baseball certainly helped that. However, the Yankees could decide to move on from Verdugo if they can package him in another deal.
Will Leitch of MLB.com reported that there’s still skepticism about Verdugo as their everyday left fielder. With Cody Bellinger available, New York could be the right fit. Leitch had the following to say about the Yankees, who he ranked as the second-best fit to acquire the former MVP.
“There wouldn’t seem to be space for Bellinger right now, not with the acquisitions of Soto and Alex Verdugo, but there remains skepticism that the Yanks will really go into 2024, an enormous year for the franchise, with Verdugo as their everyday left fielder. Signing Bellinger would allow Aaron Judge to move out of center field and give the Yankees the sort of thunderous, All-Star outfield we’re used to seeing in The Bronx. They’d have to do something with Verdugo, sure. But the Yankees’ plans for 2024 are much bigger than Verdugo. Plus, Bellinger’s dad, Clay, wore the pinstripes, earning World Series rings with the 1999-2000 Bombers.”
If New York does want to spend as much as possible, adding Bellinger makes sense. However, that money is likely better spent elsewhere. With pitching needs still present, using money to address that would make more sense.
Perhaps Bellinger takes a cheaper deal than he’s reported to get, although that’s highly unlikely as well.
