Wednesday Injury Report: Some Positive Browns News, Texans Down Several Key Players
The Cleveland Browns only did a walkthrough on Wednesday, but they got some positive news on the injury front. The Houston Texans, however, have problems that start with their star quarterback but don’t stop there.
The Cleveland Browns opted to do a walkthrough for their Wednesday practice as they prepare for a grueling stretch including two games in five days, but they did have promising news on the injury front ahead of their matchup with the Houston Texans. Both linebacker Anthony Walker Jr. and center Ethan Pocic were able to practice. Left guard Joel Bitonio, safety Juan Thornhill, edge rusher Ogbonnia Okoronkwo and linebacker Jordan Kunaszyk were the only players that were listed as not practicing.
None of those four names is surprising. Bitonio’s back locked up on Sunday, which took him out of the game. The situation is improving according to Bitonio, but it’s the injury to keep an eye on this week. If the Browns have Bitonio, Pocic and Teller, their offensive line is as good as it can get under the current circumstances. Their pass protection would be improved and might help them run the ball more after struggling mightily against the Chicago Bears.
Thornhill’s calf continues to ail him. There’s no word on when he will be available, but the team has not put him on injured reserve, so they must feel like he will be back before it gets to four games. Ronnie Hickman did an excellent job in Thornhill’s absence the past two games, but the Browns would like to have all options available to them as they wait for Grant Delpit to recover from a groin injury.
The team has not ruled out Ogbonnia Okoronkwo coming back this season from his pec injury. It’s still difficult to believe he will be able to come back this year, but he’s not giving up.
Quarterback Joe Flacco was added to the injury report with a calf injury while corner Denzel Ward was a full participant.
The Houston Texans, meanwhile, are acting as if quarterback C.J. Stroud will not be playing in this game. Tuesday, there were reports that he was still experiencing symptoms, which means he has yet to start to work through the steps to return to play. Wednesday, Ryans was entirely focused on Stroud’s health.
If Stroud cannot play, the Texans will proceed with Case Keenum at quarterback.
