The obituaries for Mike Tomlin’s time with the Steelers might have been written prematurely.

Jason and Travis Kelce were discussing on their “New Heights” podcast how Tomlin will have had 17 consecutive seasons at .500 or better in Pittsburgh, regardless of Saturday’s result against the Ravens, and Travis had some choice words for anyone who had wanted Tomlin fired.

“They were talking about firing him, what, seven weeks ago?” Jason asked his brother, as covered by Fox News.

In response, Travis unloaded.

“The media’s so dumb,” he said. “Why do we do the media? Bunch of jackasses. Just a bunch of jackasses. Just out here talking f–king nonsense. One of the best coaches the NFL’s ever even seen, about to possibly get his 17th consecutive non-losing season. Jesus Christ.”

On his “New Heights” podcast with his brother Jason, Travis Kelce slammed the “jackasses” in the media who called for Mike Tomlin to be fired.

The Steelers can make the playoffs with a win against the Ravens — who are resting starting quarterback Lamar Jackson in favor of Tyler Huntley — and a loss by either the Jaguars or Bills (or the remote chance of a Texans-Colts tie).

It’s unclear exactly how many media members in Pittsburgh were calling for Tomlin’s head, but one of the most prominent was longtime columnist and radio host Mark Madden.

“Coach Mike Tomlin should be fired the minute this wasted Steelers season ends. Enough with adhering religiously to what daddy and granddaddy did. When the coach deserves to be fired, fire him,” Madden wrote in a column published on TribLive.com on Dec. 8 after the Steelers lost to the Patriots to fall to 7-6.

“Never changing coaches is supposed to give the Steelers stability. Do these Steelers look stable to you Tomlin’s more recent failings have added up to a bad career. Tomlin belongs nowhere near the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He’s a fraud. He started fast with somebody else’s players, somebody else’s leaders and somebody else’s culture.”

In the national media, there was some chatter of a Tomlin trade, with NFL reporters Albert Breer from Sports Illustrated and Dianna Russini from The Athletic both broaching the possibility in December.

The Steelers have won their last two games, against the Bengals and Seahawks, to get to 9-7 and keep their playoff hopes alive.
