1995 – The Braves trade Kent Mercker to the Orioles in exchange for Joe Borowski and Rachaad Stewart. Merker spent the first seven years of his career with the Braves where he went 31-25 with a 3.49 ERA in 515 ⅔ innings. He appeared in 14 games for the Orioles in 1996 before they sent him to Cleveland in exchange for future Hall of Fame first baseman Eddie Murray.

2002 – The Braves acquire starter Russ Ortiz from the Giants in exchange for Damian Moss and Manuel Mateo.

2002 – The Braves agree to a two-year contract with free agent Paul Byrd.

1968 – Owners announce that they will increase contributions to the players’ pension fund by $1 million to $5.1 million per year. The players overwhelmingly vote down the proposal 491-7.

Today in 2020 was the day that MLB turned the minor leagues upside down, taking control of the leagues and eliminating a number of them. With each team now limited to five domestic affiliates, the Braves lost their short-season Appalachian League team in Danville, Virginia. Not directly related, the Braves dropped the Florida Fire Frogs, and signed on the Augusta Green Jackets to be their new Low-A affiliate.
I miss the D-Braves. There is still a thing called the Appalachian League but now it’s a wood bat league for college players to play in during the summer.
