In their final act of the season, the Washington Commanders fell to the Dallas Cowboys and secured the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft.

LANDOVER, Md. — The Washington Commanders finished their NFL season on an eight-game losing streak, falling to the Dallas Cowboys 38-10, and have secured the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft in the process.

The Commanders came out swinging against the NFC East Division leaders going for it on fourth down twice during their opening drive and unveiling a trick play along the way.

Unfortunately for Washington, the second attempt came up short and after the turnover on downs, the Cowboys drove 67 yards in eight plays to open up the scoring.

The Commanders clearly came out with the intention of playing aggressively and loose and assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy unleashed several trick plays that had quarterback Sam Howell attempt a pass after receiving a pitch from tight end Logan Thomas and then securing his first career reception off the arm of college teammate receiver Dyami Brown.

Aggressive play on defense and special teams led to a blocked field goal and tip-drill interception as well, and many at home were likely wondering where this version of Washington football had been hiding all season.

Dallas receiver CeeDee Lamb became just the sixth receiver in NFL history to record 130 catches in a single season and also became the fourth in history to collect 125 receptions and 10 touchdowns in one year.

Tony Romo unexpectedly drops ‘Redskins’ blooper during broadcast

“Did Tony Romo just say ‘Redskins’ how may freaking years later?”

Tony Romo certainly isn’t the first TV announcer or reporter to do it, but he referred to the Washington “Redskins” Sunday.

The funny thing about it is this — Romo didn’t even work the Washington Commanders game. Instead, the Fox Sports analyst called the Green Bay Packers vs. Chicago Bears matchup. The conversation turned to Bears defensive end Montez Sweat, who was recently named to the Pro Bowl.

Sweat began the season in Washington before being traded to the Bears in late October. Romo pointed out he had a chance to make NFL history.

“[Montez Sweat] has a chance to lead two franchises in sacks this year, the Redskins and the Bears,” Romo said.

“Crazy … it’s never happened in the history of the league,” noted Romo’s broadcast partner, Jim Nantz.

“Commanders,” Romo quickly chimed in, correcting himself.

It happens. It’s not unusual to hear fans still accidentally refer to the team as the Redskins, just like others mistakenly refer to the Oakland Raiders or the San Diego Chargers, or on the baseball side, the Cleveland Indians, Tampa Bay Devil Rays or Florida Marlins.

Slightly compounding the matter is the franchise changed its name because “Redskins” was seen by many an insensitive. (It would have been even weirder if Romo had called them the “Washington Football Team,” the franchise name in 2020-21 before it became the Commanders.)
