Jim Harbaugh finally catches up to his dad and brother
Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh just continued a family tradition.
“I can now sit at the big person’s table in the family!” Harbaugh said, via The Athletic’s Tess DeMeyer. “My dad, Jack Harbaugh won a national championship, and my brother won a Super Bowl. It’s good to be at the big person’s table from now on.”
In a household of football coaches, winning a championship would surely be the key to bragging rights. And due to Michigan football’s Monday night demolition of Washington football for the National Championship, Jim Harbaugh now has something new to bring up during family dinners.
His brother John currently coaches the Baltimore Ravens and is well known by many for being the mastermind on the sidelines when the Ravens were victorious in the 2013 Super Bowl. Interestingly, Jim was an assistant for the San Francisco 49ers at that time, the losing team at the said Super Bowl.
It’s better late than never, as the saying goes. While Jim might have taken some time before catching up to his father and brother, his feat is definitely something to be proud of. Michigan football just finished their 2023 season with a clean 15-0 record, collecting wins against multiple powerhouse schools, including longtime rivals Ohio State.
Safe to say, it’s surely all smiles and cheers inside the Harbaugh household at the moment.
The former San Francisco 49ers coach was surprised by his brother, John, on the sideline while Michigan approached a perfect 15-0 season.
“Who’s this guy?” a TV announcer said. “Security, who is that?”
The joke became obvious when John, who coaches the Baltimore Ravens, walked up to Jim on Michigan’s sideline and shared a warm hug with his brother.
The Ravens currently hold the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs.
John’s Baltimore team beat Jim’s 49ers squad in Super Bowl XLVII.
After the Wolverines overcame a year filled with controversy and cheating accusations to punish Washington in the CFP championship, Jim and John embraced again during Michigan’s national title celebration.
This time, Jim lifted John in the air, then reunited with family members while showing off a joyous smile and sharing a kiss.
“Now I can sit at the big person’s table,” Jim said on ESPN, referring to his father and brother also having championship trophies.
It was clearly a family affair for Jim, who connected with his NFL brother twice as Michigan won its first college championship since 1997.
Now, the big question is whether Jim will return to professional football and follow his brother back to the NFL.
The Las Vegas Raiders, Carolina Panthers and Washington Commanders are among teams with open head coaching jobs.
Jim has toyed with an NFL return for years and his value is peaking in college while Michigan continues to face cheating accusations.
“I just want to enjoy this,” Jim said. “Does it always have to be what’s next?”
Michigan led 17-10 at halftime and dominated Washington 17-3 in the second half.
It was a highly convincing win for the Wolverines and another reminder of the football excellence at the heart of the Harbaugh family.
