Canberra has pulled off a timely recruitment coup, with promising Panthers back-rower Zac Hosking joining the club immediately on a three-year NRL deal.

The 26-year-old had a breakout campaign with the reigning premiers last year, making 21 appearances and crossing for three tries, but was overlooked for the NRL grand final victory over the Broncos.

Hosking had been linked with a switch to the nation’s capital in recent months and both clubs confirmed the move on Wednesday afternoon, with Penrith granting the forward an early release from his playing contract.

“We always knew keeping Zac at the club beyond 2024 would always be an uphill battle,” chief executive Matt Cameron said in a statement.

“Making this decision now gives the club the opportunity to promote from within our full time squad. We thank Zac for his service to our club and wish him the best of luck with his future endeavours.”

A second-generation star, his father David – nicknamed ‘The Mule’ during his first grade career – played over 75 games across stints with South Sydney and Manly.

Hosking made his NRL debut for the Broncos in 2022 before moving to Penrith, with the Raiders set to be his third club in as many seasons.

“In the brief time we’ve known Zac, and through watching him play in the NRL over the last few seasons, it’s evident that his work ethic, ability, and character will be great additions to our club,” Canberra’s head of recruitment Joel Carbone said.

“He also adds some versatility to our squad, having played several positions in his career, and we’re delighted to have him on board.

“We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Penrith Panthers for their professionalism and transparency throughout this process.”

Hosking will join the club in pre-season and is expected to join the likes of NSW Origin star Hudson Young and English international Elliott Whitehead in the back-row rotation for the Green Machine, with the latter expected to retire at the end of 2024.
