GREENVILLE, S.C. (Furman Athletics) – JP Pegues and Alex Williams scored 20 points apiece to lead Furman to an 82-73 victory over East Tennessee State in Southern Conference men’s basketball action Saturday afternoon at Timmons Arena.
With the Paladins leading 53-45 and less than 15:30 remaining, Pegues scored 11 consecutive points and Williams followed with a three-point play to cap a 16-3 run that boosted the Paladin advantage to 69-48 with under 12 minutes left. ETSU held the Paladins to just one field goal over the next eight-plus minutes to fashion an 18-4 run, but Furman hit 4-of-6 free throws down the stretch and Carter Whitt delivered a crucial layup and steal to secure the victory.
Williams hit 7-of-13 shots from the field, including 3-of-4 behind the arc, to finish with 20 points and seven rebounds while Pegues went 8-for-8 at the charity stripe to net his team-high 20. Whitt added 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor and 4-for-4 at the line to go with his five boards, five assists, and four steals. Garrett Hien rounded out Furman’s double-figure scorers with 10 points, all in the first half.
The Paladins (8-9, 2-2 SoCon), who led 44-37 at intermission, converted on 23-of-26 free throw attempts to outscore ETSU by 16 points at the foul line. Furman shot 44.1% from the field and connected on 7-of-20 three-point tries. On the strength of 14 offensive boards, the Paladins compiled a 40-36 rebounding advantage.
ETSU (9-8, 1-3 SoCon) managed a 38-36 edge in points in the paint, but the Bucs shot just 36.1% in the second half to finish at 43.9% from the field and made only 7-of-11 free throws. Jaden Seymour led all scorers with 23 points while Quimari Peterson posted 16 points, seven boards, and three assists. Ebby Asamoah and Jadyn Parker contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Bucs.
The Paladin victory evened the all-time series between the schools at 34-34 and marked Furman’s sixth straight win over the Bucs inside Timmons Arena.
Furman travels to Lexington, Va., to face the VMI Keydets on Wednesday night. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ and can be heard via The Fan Upstate.
