Bitterly cold temperatures and subzero wind chills have prompted warming shelters to open across Michigan.

A wind chill advisory is effect Monday with the National Weather Service warning of “dangerously cold wind chill readings.” Wind chills in Southeast Michigan could drop 25 degrees below zero Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. In West Michigan, lake effect snow will continue to accumulate Monday with wind chills ranging between -10 and -20.

“Wind chill numbers like these mean frostbite can occur in 15 to 30 minutes,” the National Weather Service said.

This extremely cold weather prompted the city of Lansing to activate its Code Blue emergency shelters through Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 5 p.m. It joins communities throughout Michigan that are offering warming shelters to those in need.
