Asuspect eluding police in a stolen pickup truck allegedly killed the parents of six young children in a head-on crash as they drove home from a date night.
Angel Melendez-Ortiz of Romulus, Michigan, has been charged with two counts each of second-degree murder, first-degree fleeing and eluding police causing death, reckless driving, and operating a vehicle with a suspended license, according to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office.
Melendez-Ortiz, 35, pleaded not guilty to the charges, CBS News reported. His bond was set at $1.5 million.
Melendez-Ortiz is accused of fleeing police in a stolen vehicle and leading officers on a wrong-way, high speed chase — reaching speeds in excess of 100 mph with his headlights off —- down a Pontiac, Michigan, freeway on Jan. 6, prosecutors said.
The chase came to an abrupt end around 1:30 a.m., when Melendez-Ortiz allegedly struck Ryan and Jen Ambrosio head-on in their SUV.
Ryan, 45, and Jen, 43, died instantly, leaving behind six children between the ages of 2 and 9, WDIV-TV reported.
