Since their reorganization in 1999, the Browns have not had a quarterback with significant success in their history. Deshaun Watson, Cleveland’s most recent try at a franchise quarterback, is hoped to be the solution after the team famously went through 38 different signal callers since its return to the NFL.

However, given Watson’s history of injuries—the former Houston Texan has missed 22 games in his last two seasons in Cleveland as a result of suspensions and injuries—the Browns will want to add a legitimate backup as a safety precaution.

USA Today believes that Tyler Huntley, the current backup quarterback for the Ravens, is a solid choice for Cleveland behind Watson after taking into account all of the pending free agents this offseason.

According to USA Today, “the Browns clearly need to invest in a backup quarterback.” “Huntley would be a clear upgrade over PJ Walker and Dorian Thompson-Robinson and has starting experience.”

Walker didn’t seem like a long-term solution, but he did play well enough to help the Browns win two of the three games he started this past season. When given the opportunity to play, Thompson-Robinson also made the most of it; nevertheless, injuries ended his 2023 campaign. He appears to be the most likely to try out for Cleveland’s backup position the following season.

Both would be inferior to Huntley. possesses greater success and experience than the other two. In 2022, Huntley was selected to the Pro Bowl in lieu of injured Bills quarterback Josh Allen, having started four games in Baltimore in lieu of an injured Lamar Jackson.

That season, Huntley was 2-2 as a relief quarterback, throwing 658 yards on 67 percent of his passes with two touchdowns and three interceptions. The University of Utah product added another score and 137 yards on 43 carries of the ball.

Following Watson’s injury towards the conclusion of the season, another former Ravens quarterback was relied upon in Cleveland. Famously, Joe Flacco guided the Browns to a postseason victory. However, Flacco is 39 years old, and while he has expressed a desire to go back to Cleveland, he also wants to get started. And with Watson in the lineup, that isn’t likely to occur with the Browns.

In the unlikely event that Huntley leaves Baltimore in free agency, the Ravens will have a difficult time finding a backup who is as dependable as Huntley is.
