Will these 2 Free Agents Help Houston Texans Challenge Kansas City Chiefs in 2024?
The Houston Texans turned heads in 2023, with Free Agents and rookies combining to help Houston win 10 games.
After three seasons of perpetual turnover in the quarterback position, Head Coach, and GM, 2023 brought a breath of fresh air to the beleaguered franchise. Now, the Texans face a pivotal Offseason to build further around rookie sensation C.J. Stroud , and there are several huge name Free Agents ripe for the taking. These Free Agents may help Houston challenge further in the AFC.
Houston Texans deliver Texas-sized Surprise in 2023
The Texans dared to do the unthinkable from the very start in 2023. On Draft Night, they first secured C.J. Stroud with the #2 overall pick. Then, they jumped back up from the originally scheduled 2nd pick, the 12th pick, to then select Will Anderson with the #3 overall pick.
Once on the football field, very few could have expected what the Texans did next. The team started slow, losing both of their first two games. A 37-17 victory over Division rival Jacksonville in Week 3 gave the first hints as to what was to come. Stroud had this to say after the regular season finale against the Colts:
“To be my first season and make the playoffs, man, it’s been a heck of a year,” Stroud said after Saturday’s win to clinch a playoff spot. “I’m blessed enough to be in this position for this great organization, this great city of Houston. Man, I’m just blessed. Words can’t explain how proud I am of my teammates. Without them, there’s no me or no winning, you know what I’m saying? It’s just a blessing just to be able to be part of something special.”
-C.J. Stroud
What Free Agents Are Available?
Christian Wilkins was among the many star players who were unable to secure the franchise tag or remain with their franchises, and are now set to test the open markets, some for the first time in their careers.
Houston now presents a golden opportunity for some of these players to join forces with a young team that is on the rise, led by a quarterback who is only just getting his career started. But Wilkins is not the only player among this year’s Free Agents who may consider a trip to Space City.
Chris Jones and Saquon Barkley should be among the many Free Agents the Texans target this Offseason. Jones held out for part of the 2023 NFL Season while negotiating a new contract with the Chiefs, and may not return to the Super Bowl Champions for another go-around. Barkley, as has often been noted, indeed did not receive a new franchise tag of his own.
All 32 NFL Clubs have received a massive spike to their budgets for this Offseason, and it is entirely possible that the Texans, with the help of that increase, Target these big Free Agents.
Time to Challenge Kansas City?
The Chiefs in 2023 were proven to be very beatable. Even so, they were still able to make a run to another Super Bowl ring on the strength of their vaunted defense. In 2024, much of the same should be expected from the Chiefs, and Houston, regardless of plans for this Offseason when it comes to both Free Agent acquisitions and the 2024 NFL Draft, could be primed to move further up the ranks in the AFC.
