Accused of shoplifting during the altercation, Marco Piña maintains that he has “never broken the law” and isn’t hesitant to confront Curtis Sliwa, the organization’s head.

After being physically assaulted by Guardian Angels members on live television last month and called a shoplifter and immigrant, a man from New York City has declared his intention to sue the anti-crime group in civil court.

At a news conference on Tuesday, Marco Piña, 22, declared, “I’m not afraid anymore,” according to The New York Daily News. According to Pix11 News, he made his first public remarks after speaking with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office about potential criminal charges.

Piña said he was born and raised in New York City, having immigrated to the United States from Mexico when he was just a toddler 20 years ago. In addition, he stated that he “never broke the law,” refuting claims made against him by Curtis Sliwa, the group’s founder, on national television.

On February 6, during an interview with Fox News regarding the city’s increasing crime rate and migrant population, Sliwa accused Piña, whom he described as “one of the migrant guys,” of stealing.

“They’re in control,” Sliwa declared to Sean Hannity, the host. When the Guardian Angels saw him and intervened, he protested, so we gave him a little pain compliance. Back in Venezuela, his mother sensed the vibrations. He is suckling in cement. He was scraped off the asphalt by the police. He’s en route to the prison.

During his press conference on Tuesday, Piña revealed that he was first afraid to criticize Sliwa due to his immigration status under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which gives some immigrants who entered the country as minors the opportunity to apply for deferred action rather than being deported. Under DACA’s criteria, a felony or serious misdemeanor conviction can cancel the procedure.

“I have no place in this city. Famous is Curtis Sliwa. Since I’m only protected by DACA, a temporary authorization for immigrants like myself who came here as babies, I felt afraid and intimidated,” he said. The incident was captured on camera, but it doesn’t show what transpired before to Piña and the Guardian Angels fighting, and Sliwa’s group has claimed that Piña and two other people were the

In his press conference on Tuesday, Piña said that, because of his immigration status under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which permits certain migrants who entered the country as minors to seek deferred action against deportation, he was initially afraid to speak out against Sliwa. The DACA procedure might be terminated in accordance with convictions for felonies or serious misdemeanors.

“In this city, I am a nobody. Curtis Sliwa enjoys fame. Since DACA is a temporary authorization only available to immigrants like me who came to the country as babies, I felt afraid and intimidated,” the man stated. The incident’s video doesn’t show what transpired before to Piña and the Guardian Angels fighting, and Piña and two other people have been accused by Sliwa’s group of being the

The group sent a statement to HuffPost on Wednesday saying, “Piña proceeded to aggressively strike and shove one of our Guardian Angels, Kimberly, hitting her with both of his hands on her breasts.” “Our Guardian Angel is a practicing Muslim, a mother of Mexican descent, and a survivor of sexual assault who felt targeted because of her gender and hijab.”

According to the organization, Piña was physically restrained by the other members until police arrived, once they realized what was going on. A video of the female Guardian Angel narrating the incident was also shared.

Upon HuffPost’s request for comment regarding the assault allegations and his ongoing lawsuit, Piña’s lawyer did not reply right away.

Shortly after the incident, a police spokesperson told NBC News that Piña had been accused of repeatedly trying to disrupt and tamper with the live television interview, but that there was no proof of theft. Officers observed him “acting in a loud, disorderly threatening manner” on the sidewalk, and as a result, he was served with a summons.

The DA’s office informed HuffPost on Wednesday that the investigation is still ongoing and that there are no updates available at this time.

“Our goal is to seek justice by all means possible,” Patricia Lynch, Piña’s lawyer, stated to Pix11 News. “That the DA’s office is looking into this and pursuing the appropriate targets is something we appreciate.”We Need Your Coverage for 2024.
