Contract Deal: Another Star….

The Chicago Bears’ offseason thus far has been almost entirely dominated by two people: Justin Fields and Caleb Williams.

In this current climate, where the Bears are widely expected to use the 1st overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, acquired from a trade with the Carolina Panthers in 2023, Justin Fields has been rendered expendable.

Some good and thankfully, uncontroversial news for the Bears is the emergence of their young defense. Specifically, their secondary, where corners Tyrique Stevenson and Jaylon Johnson both emerged as high level playmakers on the back end.

The latter of the two has now been rewarded with a new contract, per Ari Meirov.

Whilst all the talk in the offseason has been about the offense, much maligned head coach, Matt Eberflus has sneakily improved the defense significantly over the past year, especially since the impactful arrival of edge rusher, Montez Sweat.

The Bears have now locked down their best ‘lockdown’ corner with a 4 year, $76 million contract, who was a Second Team All Pro this past year, alongside making the Pro Bowl for the very first time.

Although the Bears still have a long way to go before being able to truly contend with the big boys in the NFC, after going just 7-10, although they did have a winning record down the stretch.

It was reported by Kalyn Kahler, senior writer for The Athletic, that Caleb Williams canceled his top-30 visit with the Chicago Bears on Friday.

Caleb Williams’s team stated it was due to logistics. Caleb is working out in Jacksonville, Florida, so he does not want to travel from Indianapolis for the combine, to Chicago for a visit, to Jacksonville, and then out west to USC for his Pro Day.

One could read into this very deeply. Early reports, now denied by Williams and his team, indicated that Caleb did not want to be drafted by Chicago. Throughout this draft process, it has been seen that Caleb Williams has been calculated in all his decisions.

As Kalyn Kahler stated, it could be logistics or a conscious decision to avoid the Bears. Kahler has written about Caleb in the past, so one would assume she has some insight into the situation.
