I take full responsibility, City Chiefs star issues apology for his ‘part in the matter’ after crash
Kansas City Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice has said he takes “full responsibility” after he allegedly fled the scene of a crash that left four people with minor injuries.
Last weekend, a vehicle reportedly registered to the Super Bowl champion was involved in a crash on North Central Expressway at around 6:20 p. m. local time. Authorities began looking for Rice, with a police call sheet confirming his connection with the accident.
Rice was leasing a Lamborghini sport utility vehicle that officials claim was one of two sports cars – along with a Corvette – speeding on a Dallas highway. The cars caused a chain-reaction crash, and the occupants of the Lamborghini and Corvette allegedly left the scene without checking on any of the other vehicles or people involved, according to police.
Six vehicles were involved in the crash. Rice has now spoken out, taking “full responsibility” for his “part in this matter.”
“Today I met with Dallas PD investigators regarding Saturday’s accident,” Rice said in his statement posted to social media. “I take full responsibility for my part in this matter and will continue to cooperate with the necessary authorities. I sincerely apologize to everyone impacted in Saturday’s accident.”
Rice was renting the Lamborghini from The Classic Lifestyle, a luxury car rental company based in Dallas. Kyle Coker, a lawyer for The Classic Lifestyle, said that Rice would have been the only person allowed to drive the car under the contract. The car costs about $1,750 a day to rent and is worth around $250,000.
The police said that the Lamborghini and a Corvette were speeding on the far-left lane of North Central Expressway in Dallas when they lost control. The Lamborghini ended up on the shoulder and hit the center median wall, causing other cars to crash.
Four people in the other cars involved got minor injuries. The police are still trying to find out who was involved, and Rice is helping with the investigation. It’s not clear how or even if Rice was involved in the crash or if he might be charged with anything. His lawyer, state Senator Royce West, acknowledged Rice was driving one of the cars.
Rice grew up in North Richland Hills and went to Richland High School. He was a star player there before he decided to go to SMU in Texas. While at SMU, Rice became one of the best wide receivers in the history of the school, ranking fifth in all-time yards.
Picked in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Rice shone as the Chiefs’ top receiver alongside Travis Kelce. The young player, just 23, racked up 938 receiving yards and scored seven receiving touchdowns in an impressive first season. He was second among NFL rookie receivers in yards and set a new record for rookies by catching 26 passes in the postseason. In Super Bowl LVIII, Rice caught six passes for 39 yards, helping the Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers in overtime.
