The Milwaukee Brewers are 7-3 through their first 10 games, good for second place in the National League Central Division. Only the Pittsburgh Pirates at 9-3 have a better record among divisional teams. The Los Angeles Dodgers are the only other team with a better record in the National League as a whole.

Milwaukee’s fast start has surprised many people outside of the Brewers’ own media market, and perhaps some of its own fans. When the season started, the team had 12 players that made their first Opening Day roster. Some notable names that accomplished this were Sal Frelick, Joey Ortiz, and Jackson Chourio.

Of course, having so many young players and rookies on their roster is not really new to the Brewers. Last season, Brice Turang and Garrett Mitchell both made the Opening Day roster. Joey Wiemer was called up from Triple-A a day after the season began.

In addition to these players, Blake Perkins, Andruw Monasterio, and Abner Uribe all made significant contributions to the team as rookies in 2023.

Milwaukee Brewers Outfielder Garrett Mitchell Has A Great Deal of Potential

As mentioned, last season, outfielder Garrett Mitchell was one of several young Brewers prospects who made the Opening Day roster. In 2022, he gave the team a boost in his first callup to the Major Leagues, hitting .311/.373/.459 with two home runs, nine RBI, and eight stolen bases in just 28 games.

Despite making his first Opening Day roster last season, Mitchell got off to a slow start. Unfortunately, he was unable to stick around long enough to get going. The speedy outfielder suffered a shoulder injury sliding into third base in April of last year and was lost for most of the year.

The injury he suffered is similar too, though not exactly like, the one Jeferson Quero just suffered down in Triple-A.

While he was able to return in September, Mitchell was left off of the postseason roster. In 19 games in 2023, Mitchell hit .246/.315/.446 with three home runs and seven RBI.

Garrett Mitchell’s Strong 2024 Spring Training Was Derailed by Injury

After a disappointing 2023, Mitchell was eager to show that the 2022 version of his production is more true to the kind of player he is. If his Spring Training this year was any indication, he was well on his way to doing so, too.

In 14 games this spring, Mitchell hit .319/.385/.426 with a home run, eight RBI, and two stolen bases.

Unfortunately, Mitchell’s spring ended early. He suffered a fractured finger when he was jammed by a pitch. As a result, he was placed on the injured list to start the season.

When talking with reporters on Wednesday, Brewers general manager Matt Arnold gave updates on several injured players. Per Todd Rosiak of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Milwaukee expects Mitchell to return on June 1.

It is not clear if this is a return to the Major League club or when he will return to the minors on rehab assignment. However, it is clear that the Brewers will have a healthy Mitchell by the time the season gets into its full swing.
