  • Steve Borthwick has named the Leicester Tigers matchday squad to play ASM Clermont Auvergne at Mattioli Woods Welford Road in Round 2 of the 2022/23 Heineken Champions Cup pool stages.

    Hanro Liebenberg captains the side for the first time at home in a European fixture, with Julián Montoya and Ben Youngs named vice-captains for Saturday’s game.

    In his 300th appearance for the club, Dan Cole starts at tight-head prop – for the 49th time in Europe – alongside Montoya and James Cronin in the front-row.

    Cole is just the 36th player to reach a triple century of appearances for Leicester Tigers in the club’s 143 year history and the first to achieve the milestone in more than a decade.

    The front-row are three of eight changes to the starting side made by Borthwick from the Round 1 win away to Ospreys in Wales.

    Elsewhere in the pack, Calum Green partners Ollie Chessum in the second-row and Liebenberg is named alongside Tommy Reffell and Jasper Wiese in the back-row.

    The match will the 50th Leicester Tigers appearance for Wiese.

    Youngs and Charlie Atkinson are the starting half-backs, with the fly-half named for his first starting appearance at Mattioli Woods Welford Road.

    The midfield of Dan Kelly and Guy Porter is unchanged from last weekend’s trip to Swansea, while Harry Potter and Anthony Watson retain their places in the back-three and Freddie Steward returns to start at full-back.

    Charlie Clare, Nephi Leatigaga, Harry Wells, Olly Cracknell and Richard Wigglesworth, who featured in the opening game of the European campaign, are joined by Freddie Burns and Chris Ashton on the bench.
