Five-star receiver Dakorien Moore talks decision to step back from recruiting in May after winning multiple events at state track and field

AUSTIN, Texas —Dakorien Moore’s day at the UIL state track meet started with disappointment, but it ended in triumph. The five-star receiver from Duncanville (Texas) took the track in the morning session of Saturday’s 6A meet to compete for a state championship in long jump. Moore finished fifth and was visibly upset with his performance afterward. When he returned for the afternoon session to run in the 4×100 and 4×200 relays, he was refocused.

That focus helped as Moore was part of a Duncanville team that won silver in the 4×100 and beat the previous record holder along with first place finisher Atascocita, and he anchored a 4×200 team that won gold and smashed the national record. The disappointed look he couldn’t hide following the long jump gave way to a beaming smile after the relays.

“I’m truly blessed,” Moore said. “I’m blessed to be here for the third year in a row. I’ve got one year left, but I don’t know if I’m going to do it. I’m really blessed. I’m proud of the guys I’m with, proud of my coach and proud we could accomplish this goal. We felt like we could get it all year and we showed everybody we could do it.”

Houston is set to land a former Class of 2022 top-155 overall recruit.

Ex-Auburn cornerback J.D. Rhym is expected to transfer to Houston, a source tells 247Sports.

It has Rhym, who spent two seasons at Auburn, set to return with former Tigers and current Houston defensive backs coach Zac Etheridge.

The Georgia native ranked as the 152nd-best overall prospect in the 2022 recruiting class. He played in 16 games at Auburn the last two seasons, including 12 as a freshman in 2022. He finished that season with 14 tackles. He also had an interception against Samford last year.

Houston is entering its first season under Willie Fritz, who was hired as the Cougars’ head coach in December after eight years as the head coach at Tulane. He led the Green Wave to a 23-4 overall mark the last two seasons.
