Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold: ‘I would jam Mom into….

Remember when Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold had a sweet message for his mother during national television coverage of the NFL Scouting Combine earlier this year?

At the Detroit Lions’ rookie minicamp this weekend, Arnold had another mom moment, just in time for Mother’s Day, but with a different tone.

“When I was a kid, when I used to beat my mom at racing, I had to continually beat her,” Arnold said. “We used to fight when I was younger, just wrestling with her or playing around. Like, man, I’ll never forget one time my mom kicked my tooth out because we were just going at it so hard. …

“If my mom was out here right now and she lined up across from me as a receiver, I would jam her into the dirt. That’s my mindset. And my mom knows that. I just mean in the simple aspect of football-wise, that’s just the way that I think and the way that I was brought up.”

Arnold joined the Lions as the 24th selection in the NFL Draft on April 25. He got his first work on the field with some of his new teammates this weekend at rookie minicamp and said he was “happy to be out here.”

So happy that Arnold sent a photo to his family once he got into his practice uniform.

“When I put it on, I sent a picture to my family,” Arnold said. “When I sent a picture to my family, they were like, ‘You finally made it. Now it’s time to get to work.’ So that’s just the structure and the way I was brought up.”

Arnold said the message in his mother-in-the-dirt quote was “that when I line up, I’m one not to be played with. Obviously, as a rookie, I’m ready for people to challenge me. It’s going to be exciting. But when I go out there, throw it a couple of times. You’re going to see. I’m not to be played with.”

Arnold is wearing No. 0 at the Lions’ practices. He said chose the jersey number, which didn’t become legal until last season, because “ain’t nobody like me.”

At the NFL Scouting Combine, Arnold had said: “Mom, if you’re watching this right now, your son just wants to say how proud he is of you. You had me at a young age and overcame a lot of adversity. People were doubting you, people were counting you out, and honestly, mom, like I always tell you, you raised a star. … I just want to say, Tamala Arnold, I love you. I’m right here. The whole world is watching. I’m blessed to have you as a mom. Like I said, you overcame a lot, and with that being said, I’m going to continue to keep shining, just how you raised me to be. I’ll never forget where I came from.”
